Remembrance Day

What is the significance of the poppy? Why do we wear them as a symbol of Remembrance?

Flanders Field.

WWI, Belgium.

"In Flanders Field the poppies blow, beneath the crosses row on row."

Every year here elderly men--the last of their generation--pass out poppies in return for donations to disabled veterans and every year I have to sort of wipe my brow so my wife doesn't see her former paratrooper husband sort of watering at the eyes.

Our remembrance day comes in May. It's called Memorial Day, but it was originally called Armistice Day.
